Somehow, they managed to improve Major League Baseball! (Well, fly balls, sliding into base, etc.)

World Championship Baseball (a.k.a. All Star Major
League Baseball) is a godsend for those without a pal to play the
original Major League Baseball against. The original baseball
still plays well - and this goes right along with it. The
additions of some scrolling to the outfield and the cloud of dust
when sliding into base (another new feature) are great. Even the sprites for
the players have been modified somewhat from the originals.

FOR 1 OR 2 PLAYERS on front of box; no origin or copyright date; UPC bar code (right side) and game title on bottom flap—title is upright when box lays face-up; part number was originally assigned at Mattel for this one |
Special thanks to Hankster and
Scoubidou for pointing out that
game title vs. UPC variations on the bottom flap of the box exist. My
theory on this is that the earlier copies of the game had the game title only.
Later copies, destined for store shelves, added the UPC barcode. Note that the
barcode has the digits 05789 at the end - 5789 was the catalog number of
World Championship Baseball. I suspect, based on games in my collection that
also exhibit this phenomenon, that there is a correlation between the presence
of the UPC and the 'FOR 1 OR 2 PLAYERS' text on the front
of the box for some games. I've also seen this for Bump 'n' Jump and Pac-Man,
but not on Motocross (yet). Other games with the UPC variation include Tower
of Doom and Super Pro Football.

The puff of dust is a nice touch. Fly balls, etc. are all good enhancements. Were these early 'upgrade' releases the kernel of the idea of the current trend with sports titles, which now ship an upgrade each season? |
