Battle the evil Skeletor and save castle Grayskull!
| Graphics: 5
Sound: 4
Replay Value: 2
Notes: 1-player game; first Mattel game with designer credits on the box
Screen Shots |
A tie-in to its own wildly successful toy line (at the time),
Masters of the Universe: The Power of He‑Man was the
first (and only?) game to tout the new "SuperGraphics" technology on
the box. The graphics are quite nice–this game is an audio and visual treat.
However, the gameplay is repetitive and not terribly interesting in the long
haul. First, you fly your Wind Raider (a.k.a. landspeeder, for lack of a better term) to
get to Castle Grayskull. Along the way, you dodge and shoot fireballs that are
flying through the air, and drop bombs to capture Skeletor, your arch-nemesis.
Once you reach the castle, you dodge more fireballs thrown your way by Skeletor,
and duel him in an automated sword fight. Eventually, he runs away. Repeat this
twice more with different backgrounds, then repeat, starting over at the
landspeeder stage. Best Score:
495050 [Game 1]

Masters of the Universe was one of the few games from Mattel to credit
people who worked on the game right on the box. The Intellivision, Inc.
version of the box removed this information and removed the UPC code from the
back of the box.

I stumbled on this accidentally when doing inventory. Great. More crap to watch
for! Well, here's the scoop. The only difference I've seen in the Mattel versions
of the He-Man box is in the manufacturing info on the back. The question,
then, is: Does a 'L002' version exist?
Multiple possible manufacturing locations shown - rev. L001? |
Made in Singapore version - rev. L003? |

Not sure if the (L001) on the manual is meaningful or not; also comes with comic book; also found a copy of this manual in a PlayCable set, though it's amazingly unlikely this was ever the case, since it was much more game than the unit could handle |

Nice rendition of the MOTU logo—the theme from the cartoons plays as well. |

In the first phase, you travel in the Wind Raider, trying to reach the castle. |
|
Now, Skeletor tries to stop you from reaching the castle. |
|
...and tries... |
|
...and fails! |
|
Too bad the final swordfight is automated. The sound effects are really cool, as are the shimmering fireball graphics. |
